Episode 2 Vocabulary: Childhood Memories

In this week's podcast, we talked about some of our Christmas memories from childhood. Here are some of the key words you may have heard.

Level 1 - simple key words
Advent - the time leading up to Christmas
Decorations - the things you put around the house at Christmas, e.g Christmas tree, lights, tinsel
Craft kit - a box containing materials (e.g felt, sequins, glue, glitter) which you can use to make something
Frost - the small amount of whiteness on grass and outside objects when the temperature gets to 0
Presents - gifts, things that other people give you
Wrapping paper - the paper that presents are wrapped in
Nativity - the story of Jesus' birth
Relative - a member of your family
Chimney - the part of a house behind the fireplace, a hole leading up to the roof
Level - 2 more general vocabulary
Pivotal - important, a turning points
To tend to - to often do something, have a tendency to do something
To follow strictly - to follow the rules without fail
To do or follow something loosely - to not follow the rules strictly
Vibe (slang) - the feeling of something
Going strong (slang) - continuing to work well
Vivid - a vivid memory is one that is strong, you can see it in your head
Relatively - fairly, quite
Rich - when a flavour is rich, it is strong and deep
Stereotypically - in general, it is commonly expected that people will do this thing
Dense - thick
Productive - being productive means to be doing work, making progress, doing something useful
Core memory - a memory that is of specific importance
Level 3 - difficult or specific words
Glorified - when something is considered more special than it actually is
To have character - to be interesting or unique
To light something - to set something on fire
To hark back to - to mention or remember something from the past
To hold dear to (oneself) - to cherish, to love something
Pinnacle - the best or most successful point
Affiliated - related to, involved with (usually a person or organisation)
To make a deal out of (something) - to make something important, to put a lot of effort into something when it is not technically necessary
In the lead up to (something) - in the time approaching a specific day or event
Key sayings/idioms
"A sign of the times" - when something is representative of its era
